Internship Experience with Quail Bell

While working with Brooklyn-based artist Christine Stoddard, I gained valuable exposure to a range of creative ventures. Under her guidance, I assisted her publication company in script revision, literary editing, promotional outreach, and writing press releases. One of the heftiest and most rewarding projects I worked on was an experimental play Stoddard debuted over the summer of 2022, entitled Mi Abuela: Queen of Nightmares. I supported her throughout the process of creation, from the original rough draft of the script to premiere week. The cast rehearsed for about two months before performing in June of 2022 at the Gene Frankel Theatre.

Concurring with weekly Mi Abuela rehearsals, I accompanied Christine on another project, commissioned directorship, for Cris Eli Blak’s Hard Knock Lyfe. His piece premiered at the Downtown Urban Arts Festival 2022, having been organized, rehearsed and brought to life by Stoddard. In both productions, promotional outreach campaigns were necessary to attract an audience of industry members and theater fans.

Christine introduced me to an upcoming publication she was working on, Lunar Phoenix, during the summer of 2022. Her publishing house and production agency, Quail Bell Press & Productions, undertook this project in collaboration with 33 authors, sharing their artistic interpretation of challenges and triumphs they’ve experienced as people of color. I proofread the anthology front cover to back cover, correcting spelling or grammatical errors and also fact checking cultural references. The submissions varied from nonfiction narratives to dystopian Young Adult to experimental poetry, centered around the theme of otherness.. For my work on this project, I received accreditation as a literary editor. To find more details about Lunar Phoenix, click the link below: http://www.worldofchristinestoddard.com/lunar-phoenix-an-anthology-of-black-voices.html

While working as an intern for Christine, I assisted in conquering the never-ending influx of material. I proofread and revised Not Joan Didion's El Salvador, an introspective memoir about Christine's college-funded research trip to her mother's native country. The novel is currently pending publication.

Mi Abuela is receiving recognition in the theatre community at Pennsylvania's Fulton Theatre, where it will be read aloud to an audience. I modified the original script by adding stage directions, and noting specific character inflections. The goal was to emulate the live-action play on paper as accurately as possible for its new and  unfamiliar cast.

To stretch the public reach of Stoddard's work, I submitted press releases for Lunar Phoenix, in local and national newspapers. The New York Amsterdam News and Head Topics published articles promoting the project to their reader audience:(https://amsterdamnews.com/news...
